History and Hops: Discover Lancaster's Prohibition Past at History Happy Hour
Learn about 1930s bootlegging during a special evening at Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse
LANCASTER, PA — Dive into the spirited past of Lancaster County at LancasterHistory’s next History Happy Hour. Set for Tuesday, June 4, this engaging evening will take place at Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse, located at 112 North Water Street, a site steeped in local lore and history as the former hub of a Prohibition-era bootlegging operation.
The focus will be on the infamous story from 1932 when Max Hassel, a bootlegger based in Reading, PA and operating in Lancaster, ran a clandestine operation involving a half-mile-long hose run from the Rieker Star Brewery on King Street to an empty warehouse on Water Street. This location now houses Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse, a popular venue featuring a movie theater, restaurant, and stillhouse.
