Dr. Alan Peterson To Present on How Environmental Shifts Impact Animal and Human Life
LANCASTER, PA — The Friends of the Tanger Arboretum at LancasterHistory will launch their 2024 Nature Series with a vital and timely program titled “Exploring Climate & Health.” This engaging session, featuring Dr. Alan Peterson, Emeritus Director of Environmental and Community Medicine for Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, will delve into the recent shifts in our planet's climate and the consequential effects on human and animal health. Scheduled for Saturday, March 30 at 10 am at LancasterHistory, this event promises to enlighten attendees on the urgent climate challenges facing our world.
With over 50 years of experience in family medicine and a long-standing commitment to environmental health, Dr. Peterson will provide insights into how changes such as global warming, rising sea levels, and the spread of vector-borne diseases are impacting animal and human lifespans and well-being. His expertise and passion for the subject matter make him an ideal speaker to address these crucial issues.
The presentation aims to educate and motivate individuals to contribute positively to their environment, enhancing the planet’s health, their communities, and themselves. This event is an essential opportunity for those looking to deepen their understanding of the intricate links between climate change and health.
"We're noticing the effects of climate change in the Tanger Arboretum already," said Jeffrey Hazlett, Vice President of the Friends of the Tanger Arboretum. "Many trees have been weakened from the increase in temperature. This predisposes them to disease and exposes them to pests. Dr Peterson's talk speaks to the species we love and that call the Arboretum home and how we're all impacted by climate change."
Tickets for the event are $5 for adults (18 and older) and $3 for children. Friends of the Tanger Arboretum members will enjoy complimentary admission but must register in advance. Due to limited seating, advance ticket purchase is strongly recommended to ensure participation.
Additionally, members of the American Horticultural Society Reciprocal Admission Program are eligible to attend and should reach out to Emily Miller at emily.miller@lancasterhistory.org to register.
The March 30th talk on “Exploring Climate & Health” is an excellent opportunity for community members to engage with an expert on an increasingly critical topic and to learn more about the actionable steps they can take to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
