F&M PRESIDENT BARBARA K. ALTMANN TO CHAIR AICUP BOARD
President Altmann’s Continued Service with AICUP Advances Statewide Advocacy for Independent Nonprofit Higher Education (Harrisburg, PA) – Barbara K. Altmann, Ph.D., President of Franklin & Marshall College, will be starting a new statewide leadership role as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP). The association of peers represents more than 85 independent nonprofit colleges and universities throughout the Commonwealth, working to advance and advocate for affordable, accessible, and independent higher education. Altmann currently serves as the Board’s Vice Chair, and her new role as Chair will commence in September 2024. As a passionate advocate for her community, Altmann also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and on the boards of the Lancaster County STEM alliance and the Economic Development Company of Lancaster.
Leadership
Since 2018, Dr. Altmann has led Franklin & Marshall College (F&M) as the 16th President in the school’s 237 years of history. Dr. Altmann recently led the largest campaign in F&M’s history to a successful conclusion. She is currently leading the College through the implementation of a strategic plan that will position F&M to better respond to student priorities and academic interests, invest in student and alumni success, and ensure institutional sustainability. Dr. Altmann is a scholar of the French Middle Ages, and holds her graduate degrees from the University of Toronto. Prior to her leadership at F&M, Dr. Altmann served as the provost at Bucknell University. Before moving to Pennsylvania, she spent more than two decades at the University of Oregon, as a faculty member, department head, institute director, and senior vice provost. Early in her career, she also served as an assistant visiting professor at Dartmouth College.
Franklin & Marshall College
Located in the City of Lancaster in South Central Pennsylvania, F&M has a rich heritage, having served students since 1787. F&M enjoys multiple academic accolades, including the distinction Page 2 of 2 of being one of the country’s top producers of baccalaureate Fulbright scholars. The College offers 58 undergraduate fields of study, robust extracurriculars, plus online and international study options.
AICUP
The Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP) comprises 85 nonprofit member schools embedded in 60 communities for an average of 138 years.
In Pennsylvania, AICUP represents:
• 52% of all four-year degree-seeking students
• 46% of all Pell Grant and 47% of all PHEAA State Grant recipients seeking 4-year degrees
• 49% of all working-age adult students seeking bachelor’s degrees
• 55% of all minority college students
• 69% of all the nursing degrees (76% of minority nurses)
• 45% of all teacher certification candidates
• 55% of all the STEM degrees
On Economic Impact, an independent study confirmed that AICUP schools contribute:
• 148:1 R.O.I. on state tax dollars ($148 returned for each dollar invested)
• $24 billion annually to the state economy (twice that if we include our medical systems)
• $1 of every $30 in our state economy (higher ed. is the 5th largest industry in the state) • 1 of every 32 jobs in our state
