LancasterHistory To Host Tours Exploring Chief Iron Whip's Dialogue with Buchanan

LANCASTER, Pa. – LancasterHistory will present an insightful special subject tour program, “Chief Iron Whip Goes to Washington,” on Saturday, October 7. This one-day special event will include guided tours from 10am to 3pm at LancasterHistory, located at 230 N. President Avenue, Lancaster, Pa.

“We're excited to shed light on the encounter between Chief Iron Whip and President James Buchanan,” Patrick Clarke, Director of James Buchanan's Wheatland, said. “This event is an opportunity for attendees to discover the interactions and demands of the Federal government that shaped this historic meeting. Our goal is to provide a clear understanding why the Federal government wanted to host four Native Tribes in Washington, as well as how Ponca Chief Iron Whip reacted when he met President Buchanan face to face.”

In 1857, a significant event unfolded as Chief Iron Whip of the Ponca Tribe and the chiefs of the Fox, Sac, and Pawnee Tribes embarked on a 1,400-mile journey to meet with President James Buchanan. This marked the first meeting between Native American Chiefs and a sitting U.S. President. October 7th's tours offer an exploration of the Buchanan Administration’s interactions with the Ponca, Fox, Sac, and Pawnee Tribes. The tours will provide insight into the message that Chief Iron Whip conveyed to the 15th President.

October 7th's event, "Chief Iron Whip Goes to Washington," features specialized guided tours of Wheatland, focusing on the interactions between Chief Iron Whip and President Buchanan. It’s important for visitors to note that these are not the regular General Admission tours and will offer a more specific exploration of this topic, rather than a general history of Buchanan and his home. Tours will be available on the hour, starting at 10am, with the last tour beginning at 3pm.

Tickets can be conveniently purchased online or by calling (717) 392-4633. Advance reservations are highly encouraged as the tours may sell out and tickets for walk-in visitors may not be available. LancasterHistory Members enjoy complimentary admission but are advised to reserve their tickets in advance to ensure availability for their preferred tour time.
