Lighthouse Vocational Services's Van Driver is responsible for the safe and timely transportation of participants to and from the facility.

Split shift hours: Monday – Friday    5:30 AM - 8:00 AM and 2:30 PM - 5:00 PM

 The Van Driver is responsible for the safe and timely transportation of participants to and from the facility. This role requires patience, reliability, and a compassionate approach to supporting individuals with special needs. The driver plays a critical part in ensuring the participants experience a safe and supportive environment while in transit.

This position is classified as a Safety-Sensitive Function under applicable federal and state laws, including U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations (49 CFR Part 40 and 49 CFR Part 382, as applicable). As such, the individual in this role is subject to drug and alcohol testing requirements, including but not limited to:

  • Pre-employment drug testing
  • Random drug and alcohol testing
  • Reasonable suspicion testing
  • Post-accident testing
  • Return-to-duty and follow-up testing (if applicable)

The use of marijuana (including medical marijuana), even if legal under state law, is prohibited under federal DOT regulations for individuals performing safety-sensitive functions. All applicants must be able to comply with federal and state laws governing drug and alcohol use and testing.

Pay Rate: $16.50 with $500 sign on bonus

Requirements:

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must be 21 years old
  • Must have a valid PA License with a clean driving record
  • Pass Lighthouse driver's test
  • Pass a DOT Physical and PA State Police Background Check
  • Able to safely drive a 12 or 15 passenger van/bus with ability to help participants enter and exit the vehicle safely
  • Able to drive to specific addresses and locations
  • Able to use GPS
  • Able to recognize and report safety and mechanical issues promptly to administration
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write English
  • Able to maintain confidentiality and respect privacy


Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the safety and security of participants at all times
  • Begin each route on time and safely operate the passenger van to pick up program participants to ensure that they arrive at Lighthouse and/or return them to their homes or place of residence according to the prescribed schedules
  • Perform basic vehicle inspections before and after each trip, including checking fluid levels, tire pressure, and other essential systems.
  • Maintain safe and orderly behavior by and between participant passengers in the van while riding in, entering, or exiting the vehicle
  • Refuel vans as required
  • Excellent Customer service skills
  • Good knowledge of road safety regulations and traffic laws
  • Adhere to all traffic laws, regulations, and company policies while driving
  • Ensure the van is clean, well-maintained, and complies with safety regulations
    • May require lifting wheelchairs
    • Strong attention to detail and good organizational skills
    • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
    • Have quarterly meetings with supervisor for performance review/goal setting implementation and coaching
    • Work as a team player with colleagues to promote positive and engaging work environment
    • Advocate for the rights of individuals with IDD in various settings, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations
    • Attends staff/professional development training
    • Supports the mission and vision of Lighthouse Vocational Services
    • All other tasks as assigned

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent bending, kneeling, and reaching to assist individuals in and out of the vehicle, secure wheelchairs, and operate lift/ramp equipment.
  • Must be able to climb a minimum of three steps in and out of van/bus
  • Must be able to push/pull up to twenty-five pounds, including assisting individuals with mobility needs and handling adaptive equipment
  • Must possess good Manual dexterity to operate vehicle controls, tie-down systems, seatbelts, and wheelchair restraints.
  • Must have Full range of motion in upper and lower extremities for safe operation of the vehicle and assisting individuals.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of thirty-five pounds
  • Ability to drive for extended periods.
  • Tolerance for varying weather conditions
  • Must be able to drive in varying weather conditions
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time
  • May need to walk on uneven ground
