The Director of Marketing & Communications at LancasterHistory is responsible for the development and execution of marketing strategies that raise awareness of the institution, build revenue, and increase engagement.

The Director of Marketing & Communications at LancasterHistory is responsible for the development and execution of marketing strategies that raise awareness of the institution, build revenue, and increase engagement. This position works closely with other LancasterHistory departments and staff, ensuring consistent and concise communications among internal stakeholders, while creating consistent and clear messaging for external audiences. A successful candidate for the Director of Marketing & Communications is a collaborative, creative, and self-directed individual with integrity and a keen eye on welcoming and including new and diverse audiences to LancasterHistory.

Compensation: This position is a full-time, salaried (exempt) position which includes some weekend and evening work as organizational needs dictate. The salary is negotiable with experience within a range of $65,000-$75,000 for a total of 37.5 hours per week starting March 1, 2026. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance, generous vacation and holiday allowance, sick time, the ability to participate in a 401K or 403B retirement plan, and short-term disability.

General Responsibilities:

  • Develops and oversees all brand identity and management, advertising, promotion, digital marketing (including social media and websites), email marketing, and public relations;
  • Develops and oversees the timely creation and distribution of all marketing materials and communication pieces, including print and digital collateral;
  • Works with outside vendors, such as graphic designers, printers, promotional sales, photographers, and videographers, to create marketing pieces and products that are vibrant, informative, and aligned with brand standards;
  • Manages the organization’s brand identity, ensuring all collateral materials, digital presence, advertising, promotional programs, and signage are aligned with set standards;
  • Leads, creates, manages, and implements multi-year marketing and communications plans, which support the organization’s strategic initiatives;
  • Identifies and leverages cross-marketing opportunities with local, regional, and state partners and constituencies;
  • Develops a robust marketing data strategy to collect audience feedback and assess said feedback to gauge and evaluate the effectiveness and impact of marketing efforts; conduct research on current and future market trends;
  • Collaborates with other department leaders to create marketing and communication strategies for LancasterHistory’s exhibitions, programs, and events;
  • Collaborates with the Development department to help create and fulfill corporate sponsorship benefits and recognize donor, foundation, and/or grant support of initiatives and programs in marketing collateral;
  • Supervises one full-time employee, and guides this employee in their work and tasks as assigned;
  • Actively participates in the overall management of the organization by serving on Leadership Team and as an occasional On-site Administrator (eg. “manager on duty”);
  • Together with the Director of Operations, tracks marketing expenses, maintains or updates contracts with vendors, and creates an annual marketing budget;
  • Represents LancasterHistory at public events to raise awareness of organization and offerings (i.e. tabling, networking, etc.);
  • Serves as a representative of the organization within the community and for media appearances;
  • Supports the institutional commitment to elevating diversity and inclusiveness as a core value; and
  • Assists the Director of Operations and President & CEO in other duties as assigned or as they arise.


Skills & Abilities:

  • Experience in various areas of marketing, including: website management and analytics; social media; public relations; videography and/or photography; email marketing; design; and print marketing.
  • Skilled at managing both high level strategy and logistical implementation;
  • Proven ability to create and successful execute a marketing and communications plan;
  • Excellent customer service, oral communication, and writing (grammar) skills;
  • Superior interpersonal skills and experience working across departments;
  • Commitment to inclusive and accessible practices that welcome, respect, and represent all communities;
  • Demonstrated administrative and supervisory experience in previous positions;
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, with ability to self-direct,  prioritize, and meet deadlines independently;
  • Strong capacity to see and solve problems or create opportunity;
  • High level computer skills, specifically with Windows PC and Microsoft O365;
  • Knowledgeable and proficient in the use of various software and applications such as: Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Zoom, Slack, LinkTree, Canva, MailChimp, WordPress, and Woocommerce.

Essential Functions:

  • Occasional evening and weekend work or as special events require;
  • Frequent communication with the public and colleagues in person and in writing;


Work Schedule & Job Location:

The work schedule is generally Monday through Saturday, 9am to 5pm. A flexible work schedule or additional work hours may be necessary. This is a primarily onsite position (either 230 N. President Ave or 13-15 E. Vine St) with opportunity for remote work as necessary to complete specific actions or deadlines as job needs dictate. 


Minimum Experience:

Any combination of education and experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities for successful performance can be equivalent to:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in marketing or related field (eg: communications, English, journalism);
  • At least 5 years of experience in direct-to-consumer marketing and communications, public media and relations, and brand management, ideally in a museum, education, or non-profit setting; and/or
  • Proven experience and success in the management and development of staff (supervisory responsibilities).

                   

Additional Details:

The Director of Marketing & Communications will have use of a LancasterHistory-supplied laptop and other computer peripherals required to do their job responsibilities, including access to software applications. This position does not receive a company cellphone and therefore may need to use their personal device to post social media content or take photographs for social media.


The Director of Marketing & Communications will also participate in the follow meetings and evaluations:

- Participate in One-on-One meetings each month with their supervisor for which they will prepare the agenda one day prior to the meeting and provide post-meeting minutes. One-on-One meetings are good opportunities to discuss large-picture issues or strategies.

- Participate in a weekly meeting to touch base with their supervisor on current activities and weekly goals.

- Participate in two performance evaluations per year (June and December); and

- Complete necessary IT Security training modules.
