The Edible Classroom is seeking a dedicated and passionate School Garden Educator to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong appreciation for nature and educating children, with the ability to teach prescribed curriculum in an outdoor school garden setting spring, summer and fall and an indoor classroom setting during the winter.

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate School Garden Educator to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong appreciation for nature and educating children, with the ability to teach prescribed curriculum in an outdoor school garden setting spring, summer and fall and an indoor classroom setting during the winter. This role involves teaching elementary-age classes how to prepare soil, plant, care for their crops, harvest and incorporate freshly harvested produce into a snack using mobile kitchen supplies outdoors in their on-site school garden during the growing season. Schools are located in School District of Lancaster, Penn Manor and Columbia Borough School Districts. Self-motivated, collaborative, passionate, creative, multi-lingual, life-long learners are encouraged to apply.

Duties

  • Educate students how to plant and care for fruits, vegetables and pollinator-attracting natives.
  • Teach The Edible Classroom's curriculum to groups of 12-25 elementary age students outdoors during the growing season and indoors during the winter.
  • Educate students how to follow a simple recipe using freshly harvested garden produce.
  • Perform regular garden maintenance including weeding, pruning, mulching, and watering with a special emphasis on inviting students into the process.
  • Monitor plant health and diagnose issues such as pests or diseases.
  • Collaborate with team members to accomplish the goals of The Edible Classroom.
  • Fill a leadership role during Garden Camp season.
  • Maintain organization of storage areas.
  • Use a simple technology platform to record data regarding # of students served and pounds of produce harvested.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree or a college graduate, OR an equivalent amount of experience as determined by the organization.
  • Able to communicate with adults and students alike.
  • Able to address normal behavioral issues with students.
  • Must be able to multitask and prioritize.
  • Eager to learn and teach concepts of gardening, math, biology, ecology, history, and environmental stewardship outdoors in a school garden.
  • Passionate about growing food, environmental sustainability and wellness.
  • Previous experience in gardening is highly desirable.
  • Teaching experience is a must.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: From $20.00 per hour

Expected hours: 33 – 35 per week
