Explore a rewarding career with the City of Lancaster, Pennsylvania!

Spanning just 7 square miles in south Central Pennsylvania, the City of Lancaster is home to nearly 60,000 diverse residents. The City oversees a range of public services including fire and police, health, housing, parks, streets, as well as water and wastewater for upwards of 120,000 customers in the surrounding region. This work is powered by nearly 600 employees who are committed to the core values of quality, teamwork, integrity, and respect.

The City of Lancaster operates under a Home Rule Charter, adopted by Lancaster City voters in 2024. Elected positions include the Mayor, City Councilors (7), and Controller, all of whom serve four-year terms and are elected at-large. This form of government provides for the Mayor administering all City operations, with Council serving as a legislative body, and the Controller serving as a fiscal officer.

The City’s operations include, but are not limited to, operating a water system with two water plants and a wastewater system both serving customers inside and outside the City; police and fire bureaus; subdivision, land development and zoning services; property maintenance, lead and building code enforcement; neighborhood engagement and special events; and other services and programs.

The City of Lancaster offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, vision, and dental insurance; paid time off; retirement savings; a wellness program; and ongoing training opportunities. Employees can choose from several generous health insurance options, supported by Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) to provide affordable and flexible coverage. The paid time off package includes twelve holidays, two personal days, and vacation and sick leave that increase with longevity. To support long‑term financial security, the City provides two pension plans—the Cash Balance Pension Plan and the Supplemental Pension Plan—and also offers optional deferred compensation through 457(b) plans available from Nationwide and MetLife, which provide tax benefits and help employees grow their retirement savings. Vision insurance covers an annual eye exam and glasses or contacts every twenty‑four months, with more frequent coverage for dependents under age nineteen, while basic dental insurance is offered at no cost, with supplemental options available at reduced rates. Employees can also participate in the City’s wellness program, which promotes healthy habits and provides wellness perks and savings on health insurance premiums. In addition, the City supports professional growth by offering ongoing training opportunities to help employees develop new skills and excel in their roles.
