TITLE: Director of Development
DEPARTMENT: Development
REPORTS TO: Chief Executive Officer
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Director of Development collaborates with the Chief Executive Officer and board to plan and execute resource development strategies, monitor progress, and secure major gifts and grants from diverse sources. The role involves leading and supporting staff in resource development and marketing efforts.
KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):
Leadership
- Provide strategic guidance to the Chief Executive Officer and Board of Directors to ensure effective development activities that support Club operations, growth, and quality youth programs.
Strategic Planning
- Develop and implement single and multi-year resource development strategies.
- Research and analyze donor bases, recommending stewardship and solicitation approaches.
- Write and submit proposals for corporate, government, and foundation funding.
- Oversee special event planning, sponsorship solicitation, and related materials.
- Support fundraising projects such as endowments, capital projects, and planned giving.
- Evaluate and improve development activities to achieve optimal results.
Board Development
- Train and engage board members in solicitation and income development activities.
- Support the board’s planning and implementation of development initiatives.
Annual Operating Campaign
- Design and manage the annual campaign to acquire, retain, and upgrade donors.
- Implement strategies such as direct mail, email, social media, and personal outreach.
- Supervise development staff.
- Ensure accurate gift recording and timely acknowledgements.
Partnership Development
- Build alliances with community leaders, officials, and funders.
- Foster collaborative partnerships to enhance resource development.
Marketing and Public Relations
- Increase visibility of development activities and maintain positive public relations.
- Manage the Club’s website and social media accounts.
- Represent the Club at networking and community events.
- Design and distribute public relations and marketing materials, including press releases.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Internal: Collaborate with the Chief Executive Officer, Board, staff, and volunteers to exchange information, provide progress updates, and coordinate events.
External: Engage with business leaders, community groups, other organizations, and the media for fundraising and idea exchange.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- Proven experience in cultivating, stewarding, and soliciting major gifts.
- At least five years of experience in non-profit fundraising, sales, or marketing.
- Strong knowledge of fundraising techniques and non-profit funding sources.
- Familiarity with the Boys & Girls Clubs mission, policies, and youth development services (preferred).
- Excellent organizational, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- Proficiency in managing donor databases.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Ability to sit, stand, and lift up to 30 pounds.
- Regular travel to appointments and events; must maintain a valid PA driver’s license, insurance, and clean driving record.
- Typical workweek of 40 hours, with evenings and/or weekends as needed.
