What is the Employee Handbook Workshop?

In this session,  Joshua Schwartz, and Caleb Setlock, both attorneys from Barley Snyder will walk the audience through an Employee Handbook guide. The guide is thoughtfully prepared and revised each year by several employment attorneys from Barley Snyder.  This comprehensive handbook is designed for all companies of all sizes, and it is formatted for easy editing and ready to use language.  Sections include policies and practices surrounding employee benefits such as Family Medical Leaves of Absences, Workers Compensation, and Paid Time off.  The handbook also covers Human Resources policies and procedures such as Equal Employment Opportunity Policy, Sexual and Other Harassment, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and Wage and Salary Program. The attorneys provide every benefit or policy an owner may need when running a business.  

HR professionals who attend will receive 1.5 hours of continuous education credits towards HRCI or SHRM. After attending the session, you will receive a copy of the handbook to edit and create for your business.

Meet the presenters: 

Caleb Setlock

Caleb is an attorney in the Employment Practice Group representing employers in litigation and advising on best-practice methods.

Caleb has experience defending a wide variety of employee claims. His primary practice includes federal discrimination claims under Title VII, 42 U.S.C. 1981, the ADA, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the ADEA, Title VIII and the Fair Housing Act, and state discrimination claims under the PHRA and the PFEOA. In defending against these claims, Caleb has dealt with race, sex, religion, age, and disability charges. Caleb also handles claims under the Fair Labor Standards Act and Pennsylvanias Minimum Wage Act, and Wage Payment and Collection Law.

In handling these matters for clients, Caleb is involved at all stages of litigation, from pleadings at the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission or the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission to federal and state court civil claims. Outside of litigation, Caleb has settled matters through mediation and conciliation attempts.

Caleb helps continue a longtime firm tradition of former Barley Snyder summer associates that later join the firm as full-time attorneys.

At the Duquesne University School of Law, where he graduated cum laude, Caleb was a member of the schools appellate moot court board that won the Wagner National Labor and Employment Law Moot Court Competition. Caleb also was a mentor in the schools Academic Excellence Program and worked in the schools law library.

A Lancaster County native, Caleb is firmly committed to the greater Lancaster area. Growing up, he worked at Bent Creek Country Club and received the J. Wood Platt Caddie Scholarship. Prior to joining Barley Snyder, Caleb also worked as an intern with the Lancaster County Public Defenders Office. He also operated a local landscaping business by himself for four years.

In his time away from the office, Caleb enjoys physical exercise of any kind including running and biking. Caleb likes playing any and all recreational sports from individual sports like golf and tennis to team sports like soccer and basketball. 

Joshua Schwartz

A prolific trial attorney and counselor, Josh is a partner in the firm's Litigation and Employment practice groups working primarily in employment counseling and litigation, labor law and workers’ compensation. He represents public and private employers in litigation matters, administrative agency investigations, labor arbitrations and commercial litigation. Josh protects employers inside and outside of the courtroom on issues related to employee discipline and termination, workplace harassment, noncompetition and nonsolicitation, whistleblower claims, wage-and-hour compliance, and medical leaves of absence. Josh has presented at numerous seminars and groups throughout his career on employee safety, harassment, medical marijuana, and other compliance and risk management topics. Josh works with clients on union avoidance training and counsels employers through union organizing campaigns. Josh also represents a number of unionized workplaces and is an experienced advocate during contract negotiation and grievance arbitration. He is also a trained and certified mediator. 

As the chair of the Barley Snyder Workers’ Compensation Practice Group, Josh assists employers and insurance companies in all aspects of handling alleged and actual work injuries. Josh takes a proactive approach to workers’ compensation claims, working with employers to review job descriptions, safety protocols, and modified duty programs, while offering advice on risk management and cost control. Josh has been certified as a specialist in the practice of workers' compensation law by the Pennsylvania Bar Association's Section on Workers' Compensation Law, as authorized by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. 

Josh lives in Manheim Township with his wife, Franklin & Marshall College professor Carey Faulkner, and their two children, Eli and Casey. He can also been seen performing in community theater productions and cabarets throughout central Pennsylvania.
